Let's just start this off by saying the last two weekends, I have been in what would (and should) probably be considered foodie HEAVEN. I can't even begin to adequately describe the goodness that is happening in Nashville's restaurant scene right now, but I do know that if you aren't out experiencing it, you are missing out!
Part of the goodness that has graced my palate in the past few weeks is from a quaint, completely understated French restaurant in East Nashville, Cafe Fundamental. I had not heard much buzz about the place, but knew based on the fact that it was a) French (I love, love, love French food) and b) had house-made pastries that it was one I knew I HAD to try. My picky sister was in town so I felt I was taking a slight risk bringing her to a place for brunch that I hadn't tried before, but went ahead and decided to just go for it. And WOW—it did not disappoint, so much so it led to a return visit the next Saturday.
What I loved about Cafe Fundamental:
- The atmosphere. Very simple and comfortable. With the French music playing in the background— literally, I felt I was transported to a quaint cafe halfway across the world.
- The service. Our server (the same gentleman both weeks) was fabulous! Very attentive, friendly, and offered plenty of suggestions, all of which were incredible.
- The FOOD (of course). Everything we tried was outstanding! Rich and full of flavor. Here's what we ordered***:
- Chocolate Pastry. Flaky, buttery, filled with warm dark chocolate. Seriously, y'all, it was unbelievable.
- Blueberry Pastry. A special offering this past week, it was outstanding.
- Cinnamon and Sugar Pastry. Notice the pastry trend? This one was incredible as well . Served with a raspberry compote, this was a tart twist to the sweet pastry. I am salivating as I type this out.
- Quiche, quiche, quiche. My sister had the goat cheese and tomato quiche of the day, the following week I had the Quiche Lorraine with gruyere cheese. Both were so rich, smooth, and flavorful. The crust was to die for.
- Omelette. My friend had the omelette and LOVED it. Served with the pommes frites, which were possibly the best fries I've had in Nashville—they were cooked to perfection.
- Coffee. Such an important accompaniment to any brunch, theirs was wonderful.
- Mimosa. What is brunch without a little champagne and OJ? Hard to do wrong, my only requirement is heavy on the champagne and a splash of OJ, which was done perfectly!
***Disclaimer- These items were ordered over two separate visits.
If you couldn't tell, I am absolutely in love with Cafe Fundamental. Spread the word, this is a must try! Now, I can't wait to go back and experience dinner.
